New report highlights stress of parents raising a child with a learning disability

A new report highlights the stresses and strains of parents looking after a child with learning disabilities.  

And calls for a package of support for these parents, including better access to short breaks services, improved childcare support for parents of children with a learning disability and targeted relationship support.

Pinpoint celebrates £10,000 Big Lottery Fund grant

Pinpoint has scooped a £10,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund to redevelop its website.   

The money will ensure families with children with additional needs and disabilities across the county can get easier, better access to information and links to support and services.

Missed out on the disability element of child tax credit?

Some 28,000 UK families missed out on the disability element of child tax credit between 2011 and 2016? Did you?

A communication lapse between the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) Unit and the Tax Credits Office was to blame and HMRC has been writing to affected families, explaining they will now be paid that missing disability element.   

However, these payments are being backdated only to April 2016. Not to 2011.

Cambridge production for people with PMLD

Cambridge Junction is hosting a new Frozen Light production for audiences with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities.

Home is a multi-sensory story of discovery. It covers loss,separation, fear, loneliness, reconciliation, hope and rebuilding relationships. 

It's being staged by Frozen Light, a touring theatre company, the first company producing work specifically for this audience to have performed at Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Full steam ahead for 2017

Pinpoint's Chief Executive Lenja Bell outlined the charity's plans for 2017 at its annual conference in St Ives on January 27. 

She urged parent carers to continue to work with Pinpoint by volunteering or getting involved in some way to add their voice to the collective push for better support and services for SEND families in the county.

No outsourcing for statements to EHCPs

The transfer of statements to EHCPs will not be outsourced, Cambridgeshire County Council has confirmed this morning.

Helen Phelan, head of SEND Specialist Services, acknowledged that families are experiencing a delay in receiving the EHCPs from Transfer Reviews.  

"We are actively looking at addressing this issue. Having listened to the concerns from parents, I can confirm that we will not be outsourcing the conversions of Statements of SEN to EHCPs."
