Support for children with additional needs or disabilities

Early Support is for children aged between 0 and 5 with significant and complex additional needs. The county council says the service is for children with significant and complex needs who require considerable on-going specialist support from Education, Health and Care.

This includes children who have:

  • great difficulty communicating
  • have sensory or physical difficulties
  • and/or complex health needs
  • all will need additional support with many aspects of daily life and have a probable lifelong impact ondevelopment/learning

Children can be referred to the service via a Family CAF, Children's Social Care Single Assessment or via a Medical route.

The county's three Early Support Co-ordinators are central contact point supporting professionals working with families of children with additional needs and disabilities:

Early Support Home Visitors for Social  Communication

Depending on the needs of your child and family, Early Support can provide support in your home. For example, children with significant social communication difficulties and / or a diagnosis of autism can receive help from a specialist team. They will work with your child and family, in your home or early years setting, providing practical support and advice on ways to improve communication, play and behaviour. You can download a leaflet about support visits for social communcation at the bottom of this page.
